Coat Tales

A Social and Cultural History
of Australian Menswear

From hand-knitted jumpers to Alvin Purple sneakers, from bespoke Marrickville-worsted suits to Gloweave bodyshirts, there is more to twentieth-century Australian men’s fashion than first meets the eye.

The Australian Menswear history project explores men’s shifting clothes and looks in twentieth-century Australia for what they tell us about fashion, gender, sexuality, relationships, Aboriginal cultures, material culture, consumer practices, the menswear industry and social change.
